General Information

CLOSING: The decision to close the College will be made by the Academic Dean, based on reports and advisories from the National Weather Service or other public agencies, depending on the nature of the emergency. Should a decision be made to close the College, students, faculty and staff will be alerted immediately through a variety of sources depending on the time of day. The College web site, www.vwc.edu, and inclement weather hotline, (757) 455-5711, are the two most important tools for closing information. Please keep the hotline number in a place where it can be easily accessed. Closing information will also be available on local television and radio stations. Emails and voicemails may also be sent, depending on the time and urgency of the closing.

RESIDENT STUDENTS: In most instances, when the College is closed, faculty, staff and students will be encouraged to leave campus. Resident students unable to leave will be permitted to remain on campus and required to follow the established emergency action plans administered by the Residence Life staff.

In extreme situations, resident students may be required to evacuate campus. This procedure is coordinated by the Dean of Students and Residence Life staff as determined and recommended by state and city officials.

COMMUNICATION: The College web site and inclement weather hotline are the two most important tools for emergency information. The College is also prepared to use this web site, emergency.vwc.edu, which is housed at another institution, for communication in special situations. Please keep this site and the weather hotline in an accessible place. Please notify your parents and friends of this special web site and phone number should they need information in an emergency.
